Summary of this.
Recap by Caelynn Nailo
Our party was hired by Gundren Rockseeker to deliver provisions to Phandalin. Sildar left before us having important things to take care of. On the trip our group was ambushed by goblins that we subsequently defeated. We captured one of the goblins and with his help we found a cave of goblins called Cragmaw Hideout. After successfully dealing with the goblins guarding the entrance we encountered a group of 3 wolves that were chained up. While trying to tame them unsuccessfully we killed 2 and one eventually escaped. We got swept up by water twice while trying to go further into the cave and then dealt with 2 goblins in the on a bridge in the cave. After a failed attack with sacred flame the bridge gave way. We then went further into the cave and found two damned areas that had contained the water that tried to sweep us away. This led to a room with a Bugbear named Klarg and his wolf Ripper, and some goblins. After we defeated them I took a Morning-star from Klarg’s body.
Finding provisions with the symbol of Lionshield Coster we carried them out to the wagon and the goblin had escaped. We found some coins, potions of healing, and jade frog horded by Allreg. Travok scouted the western passage and then returned but the passage collapsed on the way back making that impassable. After we finished loading the supplies we attempted to take a long rest, but where ambused by the escaped goblin, his buddies, and the last wolf that survived. Unfortunately we lost Jastra in the battle having her throat torn out by a wolf. We loaded her body into the cart so we could give it a proper burial later.
After finishing our rest we re-entered the cave and made our way up the western side of the fallen bridge using both pitons and a grappling hook. We then made our way into a large portion of the cave containing 5 goblins. We made short work of four of them and then their leader Yeemik used Sildar as a hostage. We didn’t fall for it so the goblin dropped Sildar whom I then stabilized. Once the goblin was dealt with Sildar woke up and told us that Gundren had found a map to the location of Wave Echo Cave but both Gundren and the map were sent to Cragmaw Castle.
We then made our way to Phandalin and Sildar made his way to Stonehill Inn while we went to the Shrine of Luck. We left Jastra’s body there and paid for a burial. There we found from Sister Garaele that she was looking for a spell book that the Banshee Agatha may have and offered 3 potions of healing retrieving it. Next we went to Barthen’s Provisions and returned the lionshield coster’s provisions and got a reward for doing it.
Found multiple quests to find Iarno, ask Agatha about spell book, clear orcs from Wyvern Tor, and Investigate Old Owl Well. Before taking on any of the quests we went to clear the Redbrands from Phanalin. We first checked out the Sleeping Giant taphouse where the redbrands were loitering. While investigating it a group of redbrands demanded money and we attacked and defeated them. After the battle we ran into Amafrey who then joined our party. We then went to the Miner’s Exchange and talked to the Halia. Then we went back to the inn and rested.
The next day we found the secret entrance that some kids had found. We hid until the coast was clear and then entered Tresendar Manor from the ruins instead of the secret entrance since it seems more used. We made it through the first portion finding some clothes hidden in a cistern. After making our way around a floor trap we encountered some skeletons that using my Channel Divinity: Turn Undead made short work of them. We subsequently found 2 platinum signet rings that I took one of them. We found some people being held prisoner and then freed them after defeating their guards. We then encountered a Gnothic which was reading our thoughts and eventually we defeated it and Alreg found Talon the magic longsword. We searched a room where someone was making invisibility potions. Then we searched a bedroom and found some treasure
And then saw a magical trail that was running away through a secret passage. We followed it and Alreg took a glass staff away from him. It turned out that it was Iarno who was leading the redbrands under the pseudonym of Glass Staff and we subsequently convinced him to surrender.
We then took Iarno to Sildar so he could face the justice of the Lord’s Alliance. While still needed to find Gundrin we heard of a druid named “Something” who might know where Cragmaw Castle is. So we started our way towards Thundertree which I am devoted to cleaning up. Once we got there we were attacked by twig blights, ash zombies and giants spiders. We finally found “Something” and he asked us to drive off both Venomfang and the dragon cultists. There we met another Druid named Canis Evenwood who had been spying on the dragon cultists. Canis then attempted to get some more information from the dragon cultists’ leader but was unsuccessful. We then heard a loud roar from the tower in the center of town. After that we noticed that a group of cultists were running away from the tower. Alreg transformed himself to look like there leader and then Canis acted like he was attacking him which made the cultist follow Canis into our trap. We then captured the cultists were we found out that their attempt to get the dragon follow them failed. We then let the cultists go and headed back to where the last two cultists were located.
After dealing with the final two dragon cultists we made our way to the tower in the middle of Thundertree. Before we started towards the tower I bought Talon (Magic long sword) off of Alreg for 70 gold. We made a plan to offer the tribute we found with the cultists and some extra stuff from our inventory. Then we would try to convince the dragon that we defeated the dragon cultists but they were going to be coming back with a bigger dragon. I used a scroll of augary and the plan got both good and bad outcomes as I will explain. So the plan went good for the most part except that the dragon didn’t believe that the cultists were coming back and then attacked us. First he busted down a door in front of Alreg and then as most of us were trying to flee the dragon climbed up and out of the tower. Then it used its poison breath on Travok, Oriana, and me. I was the only one to not be knocked unconscious. After that we just decided to do enough damage to the dragon so that he would flee. I first healed our unconscious members and then we eventually did enough damage they he fled. With the dragon gone we recovered our tribute items and found some silver, gold, and 2 scrolls (one that was a warlock spell). Now that we have dealt with the dragon Canis let us know the location of Cragmaw Castle.
We made our way there only to run into some Stirges which were easily defeated. After we got to the castle we noticed that it was fairly run down and there were 3 possible entrances. We chose to go into the northern entrance that was hidden between two crumbled walls and hidden by a cloth. We made our way in and enventually dispacted two hobgolbins that were guarding an Owlbear in the western side of the castle. We then found King Grall, doppleganger (in the shape of Black Spider) and a wolf that was standing near the unconscious body of Gundrin Rockseeker. Unfortunately the doppleganger noticed me while I was peeking into the room and altered the others. We made short work of the wolf and then Travok grappled the doppleganger while I dashed and dragged Gundrin out of the room to safety. We made short work of Grall and then focused on the doppleganger. After finally giving it a deathblow it said that Black Spider would make us pay. Then we found some silver, electrum, and 3 healing potions.
We hid Gundren’s unconscious body in the broken bathroom adjacent to the room we found him in. Next we set up a trap for the goblins using a rope tied to the barricade on the Owlbear’s room. Once we lured the goblins to the room we pulled the bar off of the barricade and the Owlbear took care of the goblins and then ran off. Next Alreg transformed himself to look like Grall and then attacked the goblins in the kitchen. After they ran he was able to convince the guards in the Southwest tower to chase them down. While this is happening I went to check out a room with a Brazier and two paths covered by cloth and I was attacked by a Grick. After we dealt with the Grick we moved into the other side of the room and found an altar that had been defiled by goblins with 3 goblins around it. After defeating them and Alreg taking care of the goblins helping him after they took care of the ones that had ran away, we then searched and sanctified the altar finding various treasures (a golden censer that I took). Alreg then found a trap that he was able to avoid after more goblin guards followed him which were then subsequently dispatched. Now in the northwest corner we found some Dwarven brandy which I had taken two swigs of and then became poisoned. Being drunk and not feeling like myself I opened one of the final doors which held 4 hobgoblins which then attacked me. I was barely able to run away and heal myself while my comrades started to dispatch the evildoers. After we dealt with them we were able to find Sildar’s equipment which we brought back to Phandolin.
We made our way to Agatha’s Lair via Conyberry. We found out that Agatha doesn’t have the spell book anymore and it was Tsernoth who had it last over 100 years ago in Iriabor City. Then we made our way to Old Owl Well where we met Hamun Kost the Necromancer who somehow did not incur my wrath. We found out that he was studying the area and was using undead as guards. Next we made our way to Wyvern Tor where we took out some Ogres and Orcs. On our way back we went back through Old Owl Well where Alreg found a ring of protection. We then made our way back to Phandalin and received our rewards for the three quests. I became a member of the Order of the Guantlet with the title of Shaval.
We made our way to Wave Echo Cave finding the southern entrance excavated. We noticed that as we entered that we heard a thundering sound every two minutes. At the entrance we found the body of Tharden Rockseeker who had been dead for a week. Travok took the Boots of Striding and Springing and we made a blessing to him and then made our way north through the cave. While searching we found an Ocre Jelly that we then took care of. Next we found a deep pool that contained a dead wizard and Alreg took a wand of magic missile and 2 platinum rings and then gave one to me. We scouted ahead and found a Bugbear and a Doppleganger. We split up with Travok and Oriana went through the water and the rest of us went around the stone passageway. Unfortunately we were unable to surprise them because we got attacked by an ocre jelly and the fighting drew the bugbears towards us then the Doppleganger called for backup from some goblins(?). Travok and Oriana attacked the Doppleganger and goblins while we took care of the Bugbears and ocre jelly. Once they were dealt with we went into a pit and found a dead dwarf who happened to have Guantlets of Ogre Strength that I took. Alreg sent his pseudo-dragon into a room and then found Black Spider, Bugbears, and giant spiders.
We eventually took care of the Bugbears and a couple of the spiders and then was able convince Black Spider to stop attacking us. He then asked us to join him to take care of the Forge of Spells. We accepted for the time being and started to take a short rest. I followed him for a bit and then made my way back into the room and noticed that the dwarven statue had some shiny gems for eyes. Since I like the finer things in life I climbed the statue and pulled the gems out. Unfortunately it was a trap and the roof fell in and interrupted everyone’s short rest. The only good thing was it killed all of Black Spider’s giant spiders. We attempted to follow Black Spider but he ran away. We then went back to a locked room we had found while chasing Black Spider where we found Nundro the last of the Rockseeker brothers. He was feeling bad so I gave him some of my dwarven brandy unfortunately he got drunk. Next we went toward where Black Spider was going but Canis and Oriana went off to check another door. They found a group of Bugbears that subsequently chased them.
Alreg transformed into Black Spider while Canis transformed into a giant spider. We were able to convince them to help us. And boy did we need it because as we were looking into the room we found a Flameskull and 8 zombies. We were able to get the Bugbears to attack the zombies and they killed most of them before some of them got killed and they started to run away. We killed those who ran away and killed the last of the zombies. But we had grouped up and the Flameskull came in and hit us with a fireball that killed Nundro and knocked me, Oriana, and Alreg unconscious. Travok used a healing potion on me and then killed the Flameskull. We then took a long rest which I guarded the rest of my party after my trance. About 2 hours before they woke up Nesnar (Black Spider) asked for help to clean up the Forge of Spells. After the rest I told them about Nesnar’s offer and then we hid wrapped up and then hid Nundro’s body. We then went to the eastern portion of the cave and found the forge of spells.
We looked into the first stone room that was made to human proportions which happened to be the remnants of the Forge of Spells. It was being guarded by a Spectator. Before we could try to convince it to let us be Nesnar forced Travok to attack it. Even though I tried to stop him I failed miserably and was then subsequently paralyzed by the Spectator. My party then defeated the Spectator. Next they focused on Nesnar and he was defeated as well. As I was not able to stop them from killing him we failed to return him to justice. After I regained my ability most of our party started putting weapons into the waning flame of the Forge of Spells and found that it was able to temporarily enhance our weapons and armor. After that I noticed that Alreg had not been with us and found him coming from the second stone structure south of us. I then made my way over there and Alreg told me that there was a Wraith but he was no threat even though I believe him I could not stand for presence of the undead. I then find Moremask groping the Black Spider’s staff. He asks me what I want then goes through me. He asks me to leave but I through some holy water at him. He then attacks me and after a mighty battle I solely defeat him although I was weakened by one of the final attacks. After that I took the Pipe and copper from Moremask’s room. While making my way back to my party I found some silver on the ground as well. I think Ilmater must have been pleased that I gave the wraith peace.
We then found a magic mace and breastplate. I really wanted the mace but Travok wanted my Guantlets for it and I would feel too weak without them. We then went north and finally found the reason for the name of Wave Echo cave as we saw a gigantic lake that is the cause of the noise. We finally took the bodies of Nundro and Nesnar and started to make our way out of the cave. We found a portion of the cave filled with fungi and puff balls that released poisonous clouds if we got too close but we were all able to make it safely through. Then we found a group of Stirges that Canis used magic on us to help sneak passed them. Before we finally exited we searched where the original entrance was and found a group of skeletons. I used my Turn Undead on them to make them cower in the corner while we made their suffering end in the holy crucible of combat. Now we have put the bodies of Tharden, Nundro, and Nesnar in the cart and make our way back. I make sure to relieve myself of some of the weight of the treasure and put it in my personal chest. I also make sure to refill my waterskin with some more dwarven brandy as this harsh environment is grating on me.
